A Second Look: Is Twitter Really for You?

(By Mike Michalowicz)

The truth is that Twitter isn’t for everyone. But if you have a company with an active following, like a ton of the food truck industry and restaurants, movie theatre types, then jump on it and make it yours. If you’re in like the funeral casket industry, maybe Twitter’s not something you really can call your own. Pick social media that works for you, and doesn’t just eat up your time, resources and attention with little return.

There’s no doubt that Twitter is awesome for spreading breaking news fast, or keeping up with what’s happening wherever it’s happening. But it isn’t a marketing machine. Twitter’s a news machine. The main reason most people interact with companies is to get a discount, not because they really love them. Sure, there are movie stars and celebrities and sports figures whose fans love to follow the drama and hype, but if you’re a small, large or medium sized business thinking about using Twitter, think again. There’s a fair chance that companies will use Twitter for something other than marketing, but should you be using it in hopes the numbers will change?

Just like high school, just because “everyone” says they’re doing it, whatever it is, doesn’t mean it will work for you.
