Tribe, Religion and our Thieving Leaders….

(By Owoyemi Babajide Silas)

The annoying, nonetheless sad truth is that we keep falling for the same divisive tactics every election year, young and old; wise and foolish : all of us! We have failed to learn that our poverty as a nation has resulted from these divisive tactics used by our thieving leaders, and their desire to enrich themselves under the guise of championing the cause of a tribe! How come nobody cares what tribe the scorer of any super eagles winning goal is from? I dare answer that it is because things like that don’t and shouldn’t matter!

Propaganda, defined as information, especially of a biased or misleading nature, used to promoteor publicize a particular political cause or point of view has become a valuable in the hands of our leaders to get away with just about any form of atrocity known to mankind!

An average Nigerian ; mostly without his knowing it, is a powerful tool in the propaganda machinery of our religious, tribal and political leaders. In this unending rat race for power, the average Nigerian becomes a pawn in the power tussle.

There are some seemingly harmless propaganda which when viewed with a clearer lens, will be seen as a microcosm of the dangerous trend that has made an average Nigerian a beleaguered person at a precipice! Such propaganda as : Yoruba men are romantic; Hausa men are handsome; Ibo men care for their women the most or Yorubas are entertaining/well dresed; Ibos are outlandish/Showy and Hausas are conservative. it won’t be out of place to ask : who carried out the survey that produced these conclusions?

The above examples are some of the ‘positive’ stereotyping spread from generation to generation; stereotypes that ignore the immutable fact that though customs may guide one’s upbringing, good or bad traits are not peculiar to any tribe; humans are humans!

Our incorrigible (religious/tribal/political) leaders turn tribe against tribe, religion against religion, as a means to an end and as i often suspect; for sport! These unscrupulous, inept, thieving politicians thrive on our ignorance; on our predictable emotions as Nigeriansto achieve their divide and rule agenda. they hide the diamond that is under our unity and show us a ‘miserable’ ruby each of us can get by turning on one another; tribe against tribe; religion against religion.

These inept, unscrupulous demonic politicians(leaders) ignite our tribal & religious sentiments ; fuel it into a conflagration using inciting, unguarded statements. They then hide behind the smoke created by thr fire to steal the diamond we would all had shared happily had we been united!

Constantly bamboozled; the average nigerian is so predictable and gullible. The above average nigerian on the other hand is mostly non-chalant or afraid! i am sure our leaders just laugh at us whenever we complain; knowing our achilles heel is our religious/tribal sentiments; they use it against us very efficiently!

We all, as Nigerians, have to see past our tribes & religion to reason objectively! We must ask ourselves/one another : What truly is the state of ou nation Nigeria?! We must ask pertinent questions, not dwell on tribe and religion.

I shall end this article by reminding us that our generation has the chance to change Nigeria and we can only do so by putting an end to MEDIOCRITY and EMBRACING NATIONHOOD.

GOD bless NIGERIA!!! More than every place else!!!
