How To Be A Better Data Scientist – Tips For Newbies

As a budding data scientist, you’ll have to do a lot of things at once. You’ll be constantly juggling between your code spreadsheets, trying to figure out how everything fits together and what you need to change to improve your predictions.

It’s not easy. But with a little experience, you can turn yourself into a data scientist who excels at all the little things that go into making your work great.

Data scientists are a rare breed, and it’s no wonder. The field is growing at an incredible pace, and there are more job postings than qualified applicants.

If you’re looking to get into the field of data science, you’ll need to know what it takes. Here are tips that will help you become a better data scientist:

Start With The Fundamentals

Data science is a broad term that encompasses many different fields and skills, from statistics to machine learning to business intelligence. It’s important to understand the basics before moving on to more advanced topics.

Learn About The Industry

The best way to get started in data science is by focusing on an industry-specific problem or project. This will allow you to apply what you’ve learned while learning more about the ins and outs of your chosen field.

Build Something Real

Once you’ve got some experience under your belt and feel comfortable tackling basic problems, it’s time to start building something real something bigger than yourself or your interests! Data science isn’t just about crunching numbers; it’s about understanding people too! Take this opportunity.

Be A Critical Thinker

Data science is about more than just collecting and analyzing data. To be a good data scientist, you need to be able to ask the right questions and think critically about the answers you get back.

Don’t Be Afraid of Failure.

Data science is a process, not an outcome. If your first solution doesn’t work, that’s okay! Try again with different data or different methods until you find something that does work for your problem.

Get Organized!

Good data scientists keep track of their work using notebooks or spreadsheets so they can go back later and see what they did and how it worked out (or didn’t). This will also make it easier when it comes time to present findings or publish papers on your research findings!

Take Breaks!

Data science can easily become an obsession if you’re not careful, but you must take time out of each day even if it’s just five minutes try and take breaks.

Don’t Be Afraid To Ask Questions.

You don’t know everything about this field yet and that’s okay! There are tons of people who can help you out if you just ask them nicely (and politely!). Ask questions whenever something doesn’t make sense or doesn’t seem right; there’s no shame in it!

Make Sure Your Code Is Clean And Well-Written

If your code isn’t clean and well-written, then there’s no way anyone else is going to be able to read it and understand what it does even if they’ve worked with data before! Get used to writing code efficiently while still keeping it readable by others.

Get Good At Math.

Math is a huge part of the work that data scientists do, so if you don’t have at least an elementary understanding of the subject now, consider taking some classes or brushing up on your skills before diving into it.

Learn How Computers Work

Even if you don’t have any formal training in computer science, there are still plenty of resources out there that can teach you about programming and coding languages like Python or R.

It’s important to understand how computers work so that when they give you results back from running algorithms on large datasets they don’t seem like magic they are just machines doing their jobs!
