A study by the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) in Nigeria found that 35% of Nigerian Youths have experienced cyberbullying, with social media platforms being the most common medium.
According to a survey conducted by NOI Polls Limited, 53% of Nigerians are aware of cyberbullying, and 24% know someone who has been a victim of cyberbullying.
The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) reported that between January and September 2020, there were 3,451 complaints related to cyberbullying and harassment received by telecoms operators in Nigeria.

Alex Iwobi’s Cyberbullying Experience in 2024
The gifted football player from Nigeria, Alex Iwobi, was recently the target of cyberbullying. Despite his on-field accomplishments and commitment to his team at the just concluded African Cup of Nations (AFCON 2024), Iwobi became the focus of constant online harassment from many Nigerian ‘fans’. Alex Iwobi’s ordeal with cyberbullying is just one example among countless others who have fallen victim to online abuse. However, his experience shed light on the broader issue of online abuse faced by individuals in the public eye.
